Project Overview

Walnuts House is a striking contemporary replacement dwelling designed as a bespoke self-build family home in Milton Keynes.

Commissioned as the client’s own Grand Design project, the development replaces a modest 1930s property with a highly personalised residence extending to approximately 480sqm, complemented by a 150sqm garage and guest annex building.

Designed around the way the family wanted to live, entertain and work, the home combines dramatic architectural spaces with meticulous attention to detail and a carefully considered layout that ensures every square metre serves a purpose.

Constructed using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), the project demonstrates how contemporary architecture, energy efficiency and luxury living can be successfully combined within a truly bespoke home.

Challenge

The brief was both ambitious and highly personal.

The clients wanted to create a forever home with no compromises. Every aspect of the design needed to reflect their lifestyle, priorities and aspirations while delivering exceptional levels of quality and energy performance.

As first-time self-builders, the clients brought extensive experience of property renovation and management together with a very clear vision for how the house should function.

The challenge was not simply creating a large house. The challenge was ensuring every space was carefully considered and connected, creating a home that felt coherent, practical and highly individual.

Architectural Response

The house is organised as two distinct wings linked by a dramatic glazed bridge suspended above a two-and-a-half-storey entrance hall.

One wing accommodates the principal family living spaces, while the second contains guest accommodation and supporting functions. The glazed bridge acts as both a circulation route and an architectural feature, creating visual connections throughout the home while reinforcing the relationship between the two halves of the building.

At the heart of the house sits a spectacular full-height entrance hall that establishes a sense of scale and drama from the moment of arrival.

The accommodation includes:

  • Seven bedrooms
  • Five bathrooms
  • Three ensuite bedrooms
  • Cinema room
  • Gym
  • Home office
  • Rehearsal kitchen
  • Guest annex
  • Grand galleried entrance hall

The generous ceiling heights and carefully choreographed sequence of spaces create a home that feels both impressive and welcoming.

Construction & Performance

To achieve the large open-plan spaces required while maximising energy efficiency, the house was constructed using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs).

The system provided a number of advantages including:

  • Faster construction programme
  • Exceptional thermal performance
  • Reduced air leakage
  • Large-span structural capability
  • Improved energy efficiency

The completed home demonstrates how modern construction methods can support ambitious contemporary architecture without compromising comfort or performance.

The Client Journey

One of the most rewarding aspects of the project was the close collaboration between architect and client throughout the design and construction process.

As the design evolved, a strong working relationship developed that allowed ideas to be explored, tested and refined in great detail. Every room, connection and viewpoint within the house was carefully considered to ensure the final result reflected the clients’ aspirations.

The project demonstrates what can be achieved when a committed client and design team work together with a shared vision and attention to detail.
