Project Overview

JLP Architects was appointed to lead the comprehensive refurbishment and modernisation of Isabel Hospice in Welwyn Garden City.

The project involves the transformation of approximately 1,185sqm of hospice accommodation, improving accessibility, patient facilities, staff areas and operational efficiency while ensuring the building continues to support the exceptional care provided by the hospice team.

Acting as Architect, Principal Designer, Contract Administrator and Project Manager, JLP Architects is providing a fully integrated service from design development through procurement and construction delivery.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful design can support the people who use a building every day while helping healthcare organisations prepare for the future.

Challenge

Like many buildings that have evolved over time, the hospice had been subject to numerous alterations, repairs and upgrades over the years.

While these interventions had allowed the building to continue operating successfully, the result was a facility that no longer reflected the quality of care being delivered within it.

Several elements of the building were reaching the end of their useful life, accessibility standards had evolved and operational requirements had changed significantly.

The challenge was not simply to refurbish the building, but to create a more efficient, accessible and welcoming environment for patients, families, staff and volunteers while working within a tightly controlled charitable budget.

Design Response

The refurbishment includes a comprehensive review of how the building operates and how spaces can better support users.

Key improvements include:

  • Reconfigured internal layouts
  • New ensuite facilities
  • Improved accessibility throughout
  • Upgraded finishes and materials
  • Modernised patient accommodation
  • Enhanced staff facilities
  • Improved operational efficiency
  • Infrastructure upgrades

Rather than introducing dramatic architectural gestures, the design focuses on a series of carefully considered improvements that collectively transform the experience of the building.

The new colour palettes, finishes and materials have been selected to create a contemporary, calm and welcoming environment while remaining durable and appropriate for healthcare use.

Accessibility & Patient Experience

Improving accessibility has been a major focus of the project.

The existing building already provided a degree of accessibility, however the refurbishment introduces substantial enhancements designed to improve comfort, independence and usability for patients, visitors and staff.

Every design decision has been carefully considered to support the practical realities of hospice care while maintaining a welcoming and non-clinical environment.

Healthcare & Design Expertise

The project reflects JLP Architects’ commitment to understanding the specialist requirements of healthcare environments.

In addition to leading the design process, JLP Architects’ Director has undertaken additional professional study in hospice design and end-of-life care environments to better understand how buildings can support patients, families and care teams.

This research has informed the design approach and helped ensure the refurbishment responds appropriately to the unique needs of hospice care.

Collaboration

Hospice projects involve a wide range of stakeholders, each with different priorities and perspectives.

A significant part of the project has involved working closely with hospice staff, management teams, consultants and stakeholders to develop solutions that support both operational requirements and user experience.

The positive engagement from the Isabel Hospice team has been instrumental in helping shape the project and ensuring the design reflects the needs of those who use the building every day.

Outcome

The project is currently progressing through the tender stage and is expected to be completed during 2026.

Once complete, the refurbishment will provide a modern, accessible and efficient environment that better supports the delivery of hospice services while helping future-proof the organisation for years to come.

For JLP Architects, the project represents an opportunity to contribute to an organisation providing an invaluable service to the local community and demonstrates how architecture can positively influence care environments through thoughtful, people-centred design.
